Description

Saint Agatha's Tower, commonly known as the Red Tower due to its distinctive color, is a prominent 17th-century fortification located on the Marfa Ridge near Mellieħa, Malta. Constructed between 1647 and 1649 during the rule of Grand Master Jean Paul Lascaris Castellar, it was part of the Lascaris towers but features a design more akin to the earlier Wignacourt towers, with a square plan and four corner turrets . Strategically positioned, the tower overlooks Għadira Bay and offers commanding views of the surrounding areas, including the straits between Comino and Gozo . Originally serving as a watchtower and signal post, it played a crucial role in Malta's coastal defense system. After periods of neglect, the tower underwent restoration between 1999 and 2001 and is now managed by Din l-Art Ħelwa, Malta's National Trust, serving as a historical site open to the public.

Obverse

Depicts the coat of arms, surrounded by the new name of the Republic of Malta above and the date below.

The coat of arms was adopted on 11 July 1975, seven months after Malta became a republic. It featured a coastal scene with a rising sun, a traditional Maltese boat (Luzzu), a shovel and pitchfork, and an Opuntia cactus. The emblem sparked controversy due to its non-heraldic nature, and it was replaced shortly after the Nationalist Party's victory in the 1987 election. While there were suggestions to reinstate the 1964 coat of arms, a simplified version of it was ultimately adopted.
