Description

Fort Manoel, located on Manoel Island in Marsamxett Harbour, Malta, is an 18th-century star fort built by the Order of Saint John between 1723 and 1755 under the direction of French military engineer René Jacob de Tigné and Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, after whom the fort is named. Designed in the Baroque style, it served as a strategic defensive structure protecting Valletta from naval attacks and was later used by British forces during their rule over Malta. Although heavily damaged during World War II, the fort has since undergone extensive restoration and now stands as a prime example of military architecture, offering panoramic views of the harbor and playing host to cultural events and historical reenactments.

Depicts the coat of arms, surrounded by the new name of the Republic of Malta above and the date below.

The coat of arms was adopted on 11 July 1975, seven months after Malta became a republic. It featured a coastal scene with a rising sun, a traditional Maltese boat (Luzzu), a shovel and pitchfork, and an Opuntia cactus. The emblem sparked controversy due to its non-heraldic nature, and it was replaced shortly after the Nationalist Party's victory in the 1987 election. While there were suggestions to reinstate the 1964 coat of arms, a simplified version of it was ultimately adopted.

The main gate of Fort Manoel, situated on Manoel Island in Malta, is a striking example of Baroque military architecture designed by Charles François de Mondion in the early 18th century. Positioned on the seaward curtain wall between St. Helen and St. Anthony Bastions, the gate is protected by a lunette known as the Couvre Porte. This entrance features a vaulted archway, characteristic of the period's design. In a meticulous restoration effort, the original drawbridge was reconstructed using iroko wood and steel, faithfully replicating the early 19th-century model based on historical evidence and expert guidance. The gate not only served a defensive purpose but also symbolized the fort's grandeur and the strategic importance of Fort Manoel in safeguarding Marsamxett Harbour.
