Description

Malta gained independence from the United Kingdom on 21 September 1964, following a long history of foreign rule that included the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Knights of St. John, French, and British. The movement toward self-governance gained momentum after World War II, leading to the adoption of a new constitution and the establishment of Malta as a sovereign nation within the Commonwealth, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. Independence Day, known locally as Jum l-Indipendenza, is celebrated annually with national festivities, reflecting the pride and resilience of the Maltese people in securing their political autonomy and shaping their modern democratic identity.

Obverse

Depicts the coat of arms of Malta, the state name, and the year of issue below.

The present coat of arms depicts a shield showing a heraldic representation of the national flag of Malta; above the shield a mural crown with a sally port and five turrets representing the fortifications of Malta and denoting a city-state; and around the shield a wreath of two branches: the dexter of olive, the sinister of palm, symbols of peace and traditionally associated with Malta, tied at base with a ribbon with written the words Repubblika ta' Malta (“Republic of Malta” in Maltese) in capital letters.

The George Cross was incorporated into the Flag of Malta beginning in 1943 and remains on the flag adopted at the country's independence in 1964. The George Cross (GC) is the highest award bestowed by the British government for non-operational gallantry or gallantry not in the presence of an enemy. In the UK honours system, the George Cross is equal in stature to the Victoria Cross, the highest military gallantry award. This has been the case since the introduction of the award in 1940.

Reverse

Depicts a formal portrait of Giorgio Borg Olivier, facing three-quarters right, with his name inscribed below the portrait. Behind his head, the years of his birth and death are printed on separate lines, the denomination on the other side, and the inscription of the event in Maltese, "25th Anniversary of Independence," above the image runs along the rim.

Giorgio Borg Olivier (1911–1980) was a prominent Maltese statesman and lawyer who served as Prime Minister of Malta during two crucial periods: from 1950 to 1955 and again from 1962 to 1971. As leader of the Nationalist Party, he played a pivotal role in negotiating Malta’s independence from British rule, which was achieved in 1964 under his leadership. Known for his moderate and pragmatic approach, Borg Olivier championed constitutional reform, economic development, and a closer relationship with Europe while maintaining strong ties to the Catholic Church. His tenure laid the groundwork for Malta's transformation into a modern, sovereign state.
