Depicts a black-throated loon swimming on the rippling surface of a Savonian lake, with an island visible on the horizon. Country name in Finnish and Swedish above. Engraver's initial (e) below.

The bird of Savonia, the black-throated loon, is a familiar sight on rugged, clear lakes. As a champion swimmer, the loonies a skilful fisher that only stays on dry land to nest. To the Finnish people, the black-throated loon is also the bird of story and myth, the First Bird. Fossil finds indicate that the ancestors of the loon fished waters as early as 40 million years ago.

Savonia (Finnish: Savo, Swedish: Savolax) is a historical province in the east of Finland. It borders Tavastia, Ostrobothnia and Karelia. Currently, Savonia is divided into two provinces: Northern Savonia and Southern Savonia. The largest cities in Savonia by population are Kuopio, Mikkeli, Savonlinna, Varkaus and Iisalmi. The coat of arms is a drawn hand bow and arrow crowned by a count's coronet.
