Description

The coin is dedicated to the 200th Anniversary of Corps of Gendarmerie of the Vatican City. The State of the Vatican City possesses two armed forces. The the Swiss Guard, famous for their colorful uniforms, and the Vatican Gendarmerie using the classic blue kepi. The body of the Vatican police, the Gendarmerie, was born in 1816 by the will of Pius VII, after the Congress of Vienna, with the name of the Papal Carabinieri Corps.

Obverse

Depicts Vatican Guard in front of the Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. At the top, in semi-circle is the inscription GENDARMERIE CORPS 1816-2016. At the bottom, in semi-circle is the name of the issuing country VATICAN CITY. The mint mark R appears at the left of the design and the name of the designer appears at the right.

The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican (Italian: Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano), or simply Saint Peter's Basilica (Latin: Basilica Sancti Petri), is a church built in the Renaissance style located in Vatican City, the papal enclave that is within the city of Rome. Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and the largest church in the world.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
