Description

This coin is part of the Sports Coins series which Mint of Finland released by decree of the Ministry of Finance in 2015–2016. A total of nine coins paying tribute to different sports was released in the series, with Gymnastics, Basketball, Figure Skating and Volleyball launched in 2015 and Ice Hockey, Skiing, Football, Athletics and Ski Jumping in 2016.

Obverse

A partial depiction of two skiing figures.

Close to the hearts of Finnish people, skiing is one of the most diverse forms of exercise. The sport can be enjoyed in Finland's glorious winter landscapes and is fantastic exercise for the cardiovascular system. Skiing is also easy on the joints and improves balance. Practically every Finnish person knows how to ski, and the whole country is riddled with heavily used skiing tracks.

For a nation besotted with sports, skiing has been one of the most followed sports in Finland. Finnish sport legends such as Veikko Hakulinen, Eero Mäntyranta, Juha Mieto and Marja-Liisa Kirvesniemi and their medal hauls are known all around the world.

Reverse

Depicts the curve of an athletics stadium, complete with tracks and cheering crowds. The logo of the Mint of Finland (Lion) below the date.
