Description

Different types of grain ears design in a coat of arms and size of PFENNIG letters.

Type A: smaller PFENNIG; smaller but more embossed and spaced grain ears.
Type B: smaller PFENNIG; larger but flat relief and nearer grain ears.
Type C: larger PFENNIG; smaller but more embossed and spaced grain ears.

Inscription varieties exist.

Obverse

The national emblem of the German Democratic Republic featured a hammer and a compass (drawing tool), surrounded by a ring of rye. The hammer represented the workers in the factories. The compass represented the intelligentsia, and the ring of rye the farmers.

Reverse

Large denomination and an oak leaf, date below

Oak leaves, used as a symbol for many centuries, have featured on coins in Germany since the Munich Coin Treaty of 1837. This was an agreement between states in southern and central Germany establishing a common currency area.
