Description

With the abolition of the monarchy in 1917 the military government was lifted in Finland, but the Finnish Diet went ahead and declared independence. This move was rejected by provisional government in Russia.

Obverse

Depicts a coat of arms of Grand Duchy of Finland within imperial Russian lesser coat of arms without a crown.

The lesser coat of arms of the Russian Empire consists of a two-headed eagle crowned with two imperial crowns, over which the same third crown, enlarged, with two flying ends of the ribbon of the Order of Saint Andrew. The State Eagle held a scepter and globus cruciger.

Prior to 1917, Finnish coinage featured a full Imperial Russian eagle, exactly like what was found on standard Russian coinage. But in 1917, the Finns altered their coinage by removing the crowns that had previously been on the coins as a sign of Imperial rule from above the eagle.

On the chest of the eagle, there was an escutcheon with the arms of Grand Duchy of Finland. It depicts a lion with a crown, standing on a saber, which it grasps with the left forepaw while holding in the right forepaw an upright sword.
