Description

The word "kuna" means "marten" in Croatian since it is based on the use of marten pelts as units of value in medieval trading.

Engraver: Kuzma Kovačić (KK)

Obverse

In the central part of the coin is shown the brown bear turned left. Around the bear, along with the edge, is written Croatian name of the bear (MRKI MEDVJED). Along the lower edge, in the central part, is written the year of minting.

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is the most widely distributed bear and is found across much of northern Eurasia and North America. Brown bears have a whole variety of fur colour, again, depending on the subspecies. For the European bear, the fur is thick and long with different shades of brown, ranging from yellowish brown to dark brown, almost black. It is a large animal that can weight from 115 kg (254 lb) to 360 (794 lb) and be 1.4 to 2.8 meters (4.6 to 9.2 ft) tall with a shoulder height of 70 to 153 meters (28 to 60 ft). There are considered to be the most omnivorous animals in the world with their diet consisting of literally anything they could find.

Reverse

In the upper half-circle is placed marten running to the right. On the outstretched marten's body is written the upright value of the coin (5). Under the value is written KUNE. Along the edge of upper half-circle is written The Republic of Croatia in Croatian. Along the lower edge, in the central part, is placed the coat of arms of The Republic of Croatia. On the right side of the coat of arms is laid stylized laurel twig in bloom and on the left side of the coat of arms is laid the sprig of oak tree with fruit.

The coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia consists of one main shield and five smaller shields which form a crown over the main shield. The main coat of arms is a checkerboard (chequy) that consists of 13 red and 12 silver (white) fields. It's also informally known in Croatian as šahovnica ("chessboard", from šah, "chess"). The five smaller shields represent five different historical regions within Croatia.
