Origin of motif for the obverse: Judaea, Jewish War (66-70 AD), Half Shekel, Year 4 (69/70 CE). By the fourth year of the war, the Jews in Jerusalem were in a desperate situation, not only fighting off the Romans but battling each other in an intense civil war described in detail by Josephus. In these extraordinary times, fiduciary bronze fractions of the shekel were minted. These bronze fractions comprise the world's first siege money.
