Obverse

Depicts King Gentius (left) on horseback surrounded by the inscription "Republic of Albania" on the top and the year of issue at the bottom.

King Gentius (r. 181–168 BCE) was the last king of the Illyrian Ardiaean Kingdom, ruling in the western Balkans. He was known for his resistance against Roman expansion, but his rule was marked by internal conflicts and strained alliances. In 168 BCE, during the Third Illyrian War, he sided with Perseus of Macedon against Rome, but his forces were quickly defeated by the Romans under Lucius Anicius Gallus. Gentius surrendered at Shkodra (modern-day Albania), and the Romans abolished the Illyrian kingdom, incorporating its territory into their expanding empire. He was taken as a prisoner to Rome, where he spent the rest of his life in captivity.
