Description

The New Taiwan dollar was first issued by the Bank of Taiwan on June 15, 1949, to replace the Old Taiwan dollar at a ratio of 40,000 to one. The first goal of the New Taiwan dollar was to end the hyperinflation that had plagued Nationalist China due to the Chinese Civil War. The New Taiwan dollar is often abbreviated as NT, NT$, or NT dollar.

Obverse

Depicts a stack of 11 Taiwanese coins, the 88th year of the Republic and the state name (Republic of China) above.

Following the Chinese imperial tradition of using the sovereign's era name and year of reign, official Republic of China documents use the Republic system of numbering years in which the first year was 1912, the year of the founding of the Republic of China.

Reverse

Value divides 10 shapes of ancient Chinese coins (Spade money). Dates and inscription "The 50th Anniversary of the Issuance of the New Taiwan Dollar" above.

Spade money was an early form of coin used during the Zhou dynasty of China (1045 to 256 BC). Spade money was shaped like a spade or weeding tool. Under the Xin dynasty created by Wang Mang spade money was reintroduced, there were 12 different types of spade money in the Xin dynasty ranging in values from 100 to 1000 qián
