These emergency coins were made on the Majorca (Mallorca) island, during an epidemic yellow fever which killed many. They were made between November 11th 1821 till December 31th 1821 in the Bellver Castle using blanks made from melted silver taken from the island churches.
Yellow fever is a disease caused by a virus that is spread through mosquito bites. Symptoms take 3–6 days to develop and include fever, chills, headache, backache, and muscle aches. About 15% of people who get yellow fever develop serious illness that can lead to bleeding, shock, organ failure, and sometimes death. The first mention of the disease by the name "yellow fever" occurred in 1744. Many famous people, mostly during the 18th through the 20th centuries, contracted and then recovered from, or died of, yellow fever.
