Description

Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855) was a German mathematician and physicist who made significant contributions to many fields in mathematics and science. Sometimes referred to as the Princeps mathematicorum (Latin for '"the foremost of mathematicians"') and "the greatest mathematician since antiquity", Gauss had an exceptional influence in many fields of mathematics and science, and is ranked among history's most influential mathematicians.

The numerous things named in honor of Gauss include:
• The normal distribution, also known as the Gaussian distribution, the most common bell curve in statistics
• The Gauss Prize, one of the highest honors in mathematics
• Gauss, the CGS unit for magnetic field

It is a re-introduction of the coat of arms of the Weimar Republic (in use 1919–1935) adopted by the Federal Republic of Germany in 1950. The current official design is due to Tobias Schwab (1887–1967) and was introduced in 1928.
