Description

In 2002, coins were minted for Greece in Greek Mint, as well as mints Spain, Finland and France. This was due to the fact that Greece joined the euro area only 1 January 2001 and the Greek mint lacked the capacity to produce the required number of coins to January 1, 2002. In subsequent years, the coins were minted only in the local mint.

On the coins of 2002 the Paris Mint was designated by the letter F in the star at 2 hours.

Obverse

A corvette is accompanied by the facial value, date and encircled by the twelve stars of Europe.

Corvettes are small, maneuverable, lightly armed warship, smaller than a frigate, and they were heavily used during the Hellenic liberation fight (1821-1827). When referring to sailing ships, a corvette is a ship-rigged sloop. Almost all modern navies use ships smaller than frigates for coastal duty, but not all of them use the term "corvette."

Sign of Athens Mint (stylized acanthus leaf) stands on all coins of Greece, regardless of the origin of the coins.
