Description

The Republic of Slovenia issued collector coins to mark the 30th anniversary of the referendum on Slovenia’s independence.

The Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia passed the Plebiscite on the Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Slovenia Act on 6 December 1990. Under the aforementioned law, the referendum question of “Should the Republic of Slovenia become an independent and sovereign state?” had to be answered in the affirmative by the majority of voters.

The referendum was held on 23 December 1990, with a turnout of fully 93.2%. Yes received 1,289,369 votes, as 88.5% of all eligible voters backed an independent Slovenia. Even before the referendum was held, the Slovenian parliament had published a declaration of adherence to the fundamental conventions of the Council of Europe, and a statement of good intent. On the basis of the referendum result, on 25 June 1991 the Slovenian parliament adopted the Basic Constitutional Charter on the Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Slovenia, and the Declaration of Independence, thereby establishing the legal foundations of Slovenia’s independence.

Obverse

The design is based on the date on which the referendum was held, namely 23 December 1990. There is an inscription of the date in overlapping digits, reading from left to right. The numbers of the individual parts of the date (23, 12 and 1990) are inscribed in different degrees of relief for easier legibility.
