Description

The 1998 Black Revolutionary War Patriots Silver Dollar was issued to mark the 275th anniversary of the birth of Crispus Attucks. He was the first patriot killed during the Boston Massacre in 1770, one of the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. A portion of the surcharges would go towards a Black Patriots Memorial in Washington DC.

Obverse

Depicts a portrait of Crispus Attucks. Notably, no likeness of Crispus Attucks actually survives, so the image represents what he may have looked like. The obverse inscriptions include “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, “Crispus Attucks”, “1723-1770”, and the date of issue “1998”.

Crispus Attucks (c.1723 – March 5, 1770) was an American whaler, sailor, and stevedore of African and Native American descent, generally regarded as the first person killed in the Boston Massacre and thus the first American killed in the American Revolution. Historians disagree on whether he was a free man or an escaped slave, but most agree that he was of Native American (specifically Wampanoag) and African descent. Two major sources of eyewitness testimony about the Boston Massacre published in 1770 did not refer to him as "black" nor as a "Negro"; it appears that Bostonians viewed him as being of mixed ethnicity. Attucks became an icon of the anti-slavery movement in the mid-19th century. Supporters of the abolition movement lauded him for playing a heroic role in the history of the United States.
