The 1999 Yellowstone National Park Silver Dollar was issued to mark the 125th anniversary of the park’s establishment by Congress in 1872. The actual anniversary year occurred two years earlier. Surcharges added to the cost of each coin were used for the Yellowstone National Park and the National Park Foundation.
Yellowstone National Park is a national park located primarily in the U.S. state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone, widely held to be the first national park in the world, is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful geyser, one of the most popular features in the park.
