The 2001 American Buffalo Silver Dollar was issued to commemorate the recently opened National Museum of the American Indian. The classic design of the coin copies James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel, a copper-nickel five-cent piece struck by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938.
The National Museum of the American Indian is a museum in the United States devoted to the culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It is part of the Smithsonian Institution group of museums and research centers.
