Description

Eesti Pank issued into circulation a two-euro coin dedicated to Ukraine and freedom that has been designed by a young Ukrainian refugee from the war who is studying at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

Eesti Pank was planning to produce 40,000 coin cards. The coin card was designed by Vladimir Taiger, who was also an advisor for the design of the coin.

Obverse

Depicts a girl as a symbol of tenderness, protecting a bird in her hand, an ear of wheat on the right. The twelve stars of the European Union surround the design on the outer ring.

The Supervisory Board of the central bank decided to use the text in Ukrainian "Slava Ukraini" (Glory to Ukraine) on the coin to symbolise the independence and resistance of Ukraine. It is the first time that a coin issued by Eesti Pank has text in a foreign language.

Design: Daria Titova, originally from Kharkiv, a student of the Estonian Academy of Arts

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
