The sunflower is one of the national symbols of Ukraine, as it is one of the largest producers and exporters of sunflower oil in the world. However, since the start of the war in Ukraine, the sunflower has become a global symbol of peace. The first time sunflowers were used as a symbol of peace was in the summer of 1996. They were then planted at a military base near Pervomaisk, about 155 kilometres south of the capital, Kyiv. Now sunflowers are used as a symbol of peace and support for Ukraine throughout the world. Therefore, to show its support for Ukraine, the National Bank of Latvia will issue this commemorative coin in 2023.
