The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design named Helsinki the 2012 World Design Capital.
In honour of the event, a 5-euro base metal commemorative coin was issued. The centre section makes this coin special: it is undulating with clear differences in elevation. Yet the highest ridge in the pattern is on the same level as the rest of the coin. The grooves and ridges are mirrored on the opposite face of the coin.
