The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design named Helsinki the 2012 World Design Capital.
In honour of the event, a 50-euro gold (.750) / silver (.925) commemorative coin was issued. The centre section makes this coin special: it is gold-coloured and undulating with clear differences in elevation. Yet the highest ridge in the pattern is on the same level as the rest of the coin. The grooves and ridges are mirrored on the opposite face of the coin.
The Mint Directors’ Conference 2012 awarded this coin the title of the Most Technologically Advanced Coin.
