Description

World Youth Day (WYD) is an event for young people organized every three (or sometimes, two) years by the Catholic Church. World Youth Day was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985.

World Youth Day 2023 will be a Catholic festival held in Lisbon, Portugal, and was originally scheduled to be celebrated in summer 2022. This was announced by Pope Francis and Bishop Kevin Farrell at the end of the closing Mass of World Youth Day 2019 in Panama City, Panama.

Obverse

Depicts a pilgrim cross and human figures of various sizes and textures, placed around the cross as if on a globe and clasped by two hands in an inviting gesture. The escutcheon with five bezants of the Portuguese shield on the bottom left. Two inscriptions above ("World Youth Day" and "Lisbon 2023"), the country name, the mint mark (abbreviation) and the engraver's name below. The outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
