Alessandro Francesco Tommaso Antonio Manzoni (1785–1873) was an esteemed Italian philosopher, novelist, and poet. He gained worldwide recognition primarily for his renowned novel, The Betrothed (originally titled , ‘I Promessi Sposi’) (1827), which is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in world literature. This novel holds significant importance as a symbol of the Italian Risorgimento due to its patriotic message and its pivotal role in shaping the modern, unified Italian language. Manzoni played a vital role in establishing linguistic cohesion throughout Italy and contributed significantly to the standardization of the contemporary Italian language. Additionally, he was an influential advocate of Liberal Catholicism in Italy.
