Description

On 31 August 1991, Kyrgyzstan declared independence from Moscow and a democratic government was established. Kyrgyzstan attained sovereignty as a nation state after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Obverse

Depicts the emblem of Kyrgyzstan, surrounded by the inscription "10 Years of the Independent Kyrgyz Republic", date below.

The emblem consists of a sun (with the forty rays that extend from it refer to the legendary forty clans of Manas) rising above the Tian Shan mountainous scene resting on the shoulders of a hawk. Cotton and wheat circle the border of the emblem, with the name of the country scripted above and below. The mountains, illuminated by the sun, resemble Kyrgyz national hat “kalpak”.

Depicts the mountain Khan Tengri, denomination below.

Khan Tengri is a mountain of the Tian Shan mountain range. It is on the China—Kyrgyzstan—Kazakhstan tripoint, east of lake Issyk Kul. Its geologic elevation is 6,995 m (22,949 ft), but its glacial icecap rises to 7,010 m (22,999 ft).

Khan Tengri is the second-highest mountain in the Tian Shan and the third-highest peak in Kyrgyzstan, after Jengish Chokusu (7,439 m) and Avicenna Peak (7,134 m). It is also the world's most northern 7,000-metre peak.
