In Cambodia, he is known as Samdech Euv (meaning "King Father"). During his lifetime, Cambodia was under various regimes, from French colonial rule (until 1953), an independent kingdom (1953–1970), a republic (1970–1975), the Khmer Rouge regime (1975–1979), another communist regime (1979–1989), yet another different communist state (1989–1993) to finally another kingdom (since 1993).

Angkor Wat, a vast temple complex in Cambodia, spans 162.6 hectares and holds the Guinness World Record as the world's largest religious structure. Initially built as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu by King Suryavarman II in the 12th century, it later transformed into a Buddhist temple.

Suryavarman II commissioned Angkor Wat in the capital of the Khmer Empire, Yaśodharapura. This architectural marvel combines elements of the temple-mountain and galleried temple styles and symbolizes Mount Meru, a sacred place in Hindu mythology. Surrounded by a 5-kilometer moat and a 3.6-kilometer outer wall, it features three rectangular galleries and a central quincunx of towers. Unlike other Angkorian temples, it faces west, a point of scholarly debate. Angkor Wat impresses with its architecture, intricate bas-reliefs, and countless devatas adorning its walls.

The name "Angkor Wat" translates to "Temple City" in Khmer, with "Angkor" signifying "city" and "Wat" meaning "temple grounds." Originally, it was called "Vrah Viṣṇuloka" or "Parama Viṣṇuloka," meaning "the sacred dwelling of Vishnu."
