Description

The Iranian Revolution or the Islamic Revolution was a series of events that culminated in the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty in 1979. The revolution also led to the replacement of the Imperial State of Iran by the present-day Islamic Republic of Iran, as the monarchical government of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was superseded by the theocratic government of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a religious cleric who had headed one of the rebel factions. The ousting of Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, formally marked the end of Iran's historical monarchy.

Obverse

Depicts the country's name (Islamic Republic of Iran) surrounded by two circles (22 flowers) of tulip as 22 Bahman.

The anniversary of the Iranian Revolution is celebrated on 22 Bahman, which is the 11th month in the Iranian calendar, equivalent to 11 February in the Gregorian calendar.

The tulip flower is firmly engrained in Iranian culture. The tulip represents the holy blood of martyrs who gave their lives in defence of their nation. In Persian poetry, the word “tulip” is used to depict how a lover suffers and is unable to conceive his beloved.
