Algerian coinage unfolds a captivating narrative, echoing the nation's vibrant history. Rooted in the ancient landscapes of Phoenician and Roman settlements, particularly in Algiers, the capital, these coins bear witness to the enduring cultural tapestry of Algeria.
The budju, the currency of Algeria until 1848, was replaced by the franc during the French occupation. It was divided into 24 muzuna, each consisting of 2 kharub or 29 asper. The currency featured various denominations, including copper coins (2 and 5 aspers), billon (1 kharub), silver (3, 4, 6, 8, and 12 muzuna, 1 and 2 budju), and gold (1⁄4, 1⁄2, and 1 sultani) during the early 19th century.
