The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a North American bird of prey. As a sea eagle, it has two recognized subspecies and is part of a species pair with the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), which inhabits a similar ecological niche in the Palearctic region. The bald eagle's habitat spans most of Canada and Alaska, the entire contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. Typically, it is located in proximity to extensive bodies of open water that offer a plentiful food source, along with mature trees suitable for nesting.
