A deer, a hoofed mammal of the Cervidae family, is divided into two main groups: Cervinae (muntjac, elk, red deer, fallow deer) and Capreolinae (reindeer, white-tailed deer, roe deer, moose). Unlike permanently horned antelope in the Bovidae family, male deer (excluding water deer) and female reindeer grow and shed antlers annually.

Musk deer (Moschidae) and chevrotains (Tragulidae), though ruminants, are not closely related to Cervidae. Deer have cultural significance in art, mythology, and religion, featuring in heraldry like the Åland coat of arms with red deer. Valuable for venison meat, buckskin, and antlers, deer hunting has been popular since the Middle Ages, maintaining economic importance for families today.
