The yellow-necked spurfowl, also known as the yellow-necked francolin (Pternistis leucoscepus), is a bird species within the Phasianidae family. It inhabits regions in Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, and is characterized by a distinctive yellow patch on its neck. Males of this species exhibit spurs on the back of their legs. Described by the English ornithologist George Robert Gray in 1867, it was given the binomial name Francolinus leucoscepus, with its type locality being Ethiopia. The name leucoscepus originates from the Ancient Greek words leukos, meaning "white," and skepas, meaning "covering" or "mantle." The species is now classified under the genus Pternistis by the German naturalist Johann Georg Wagler in 1832.
