The southern eland (Taurotragus oryx), commonly known as the common eland or eland antelope, is a large antelope inhabiting the savannahs and plains of East and Southern Africa. Belonging to the family Bovidae and genus Taurotragus, an adult male stands at approximately 1.6 m (5.2 ft) tall at the shoulder, with females being 20 cm (7.9 in) shorter. They can weigh up to 942 kg (2,077 lb), typically ranging between 500–600 kg (1,100–1,300 lb) for males and 340–445 kg (750–981 lb) for females. The common eland is the second-largest antelope globally, slightly smaller on average than the giant eland.
