The hippopotamus, a large semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa, is the third-largest land mammal and the heaviest extant artiodactyl after the elephant and rhinoceros. With barrel-shaped torsos, wide-opening mouths revealing large tusks, nearly hairless bodies, and columnar legs, adult hippos average 1,500 kg (3,310 lb) for males and 1,300 kg (2,870 lb) for females. Despite their stocky shape, they can run at speeds of 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances.

Inhabiting rivers, lakes, and mangrove swamps, hippos are led by territorial males overseeing groups of five to thirty females and young hippos. They stay cool during the day in water or mud, with reproduction and childbirth occurring in water. Emerging at dusk to graze on grasses, hippos are not territorial on land, and grazing is a solitary activity. Known for their aggression and unpredictability, hippos are considered among the world's most dangerous animals. Threatened by habitat loss and poaching for meat and ivory canine teeth, their survival is at risk.
