The German Federal Republic’s Ministry of Finance and Munze Deutschland have launched a series which focuses on the great biodiversity of insects we share the planet with. Entitled the “Wonderful World of Insects,” the series will feature the Big Four, which encompasses beetles, dipterans (flies and mosquitoes), hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants), and butterflies, of which 80% of all known insects belong to.

The series released within a two-year period beginning in 2022 and ending in 2024 and include nine coins in total.

Bumblebees, part of the genus Bombus in the Apidae family, comprise over 250 species. Found primarily in the Northern Hemisphere, with some presence in South America, Europe's bumblebees have been introduced to New Zealand and Tasmania. These social insects typically form smaller colonies than honey bees, often with around 50 individuals. Cuckoo bumblebees, acting as brood parasites, invade and take over the nests of other bumblebee species. Known for their fuzzy appearance and warning coloration, bumblebees play a vital role in pollination. Unfortunately, their decline in Europe, North America, and Asia poses a threat due to habitat loss, agricultural changes, and pesticide use.
