The German Federal Republic’s Ministry of Finance and Munze Deutschland have launched a series which focuses on the great biodiversity of insects we share the planet with. Entitled the “Wonderful World of Insects,” the series will feature the Big Four, which encompasses beetles, dipterans (flies and mosquitoes), hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants), and butterflies, of which 80% of all known insects belong to.

The series released within a two-year period beginning in 2022 and ending in 2024 and include nine coins in total.

Reverse

Depicts a ladybug in flight as if momentarily preparing to land on a plant in its natural habitat with open wings and hind wings visible. Digital printing is applied, which includes vivid red and white to highlight the design. The inscription "Seven-spotted ladybird” below, the engraver's initial above the text.

The seven-spotted ladybird is one of the world’s most recognisable insects and is often seen in domestic gardens, as both the larvae and the adult insects feed on aphids and scale insects. Its elytra are of a red colour, but punctuated with three black spots each, with one further spot being spread over the junction of the two, making a total of seven spots, from which the species derives both its common and scientific names (from the Latin septem = "seven" and punctus = "spot").
