Description

Football is the national sport in many European countries. The continental "summit meeting" of national teams is the UEFA European Football Championship, taking place in Germany in 2024 for the first time since reunification. The silver coin commemorating this event was created with the collaboration of the German Football Association (DFB). Reflecting the age-old football wisdom "Eleven friends you must be," this marks the first 11-euro coin of the Federal Republic.

The 2024 UEFA European Football Championship, known as UEFA Euro 2024 or simply Euro 2024, was the 17th edition of the quadrennial international football tournament organized by UEFA for European men's national teams. Hosted by Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024, the tournament featured 24 teams, including debutants Georgia. This was the third time Germany hosted European Championship matches and the first in former East Germany, with Leipzig as a host city. It was also the first major tournament in Germany since the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Italy, the defending champions, were eliminated by Switzerland in the round of 16. Host nation Germany was knocked out by Spain in the quarter-finals. Spain won the tournament for a record fourth time, defeating England 2–1 in the final, marking England's second consecutive final appearance.

Obverse

Depicts a stylized heraldic eagle, Germany's national symbol, encircled by the state name, issue year, denomination, silver fineness, and mintmark (A). Additionally, twelve stars symbolize the European Union.

The German coat of arms features a black eagle with red details on a golden background, known as the Bundesadler or "Federal Eagle." Originally the Reichsadler or "Imperial Eagle," it was reintroduced by the Federal Republic of Germany in 1950, harkening back to the Weimar Republic's coat of arms. The current design, credited to Tobias Schwab and introduced in 1928, replaced the imperial symbols with a more republican representation. The German Empire of 1871–1918 had initially adopted the medieval coat of arms of the Holy Roman Emperors before transitioning to the double-headed eagle. The Weimar Republic further modified the design by removing the escutcheon and monarchical symbols.

The design excellently captures the iconic roof architecture of the Berlin Olympic Stadium. This stadium hosts the final of the UEFA European Football Championship in 2024. At the center of a stylized playing field, complete with corner flags, the football is almost tangibly presented, symbolizing the focal point around which everything revolves. The coloring of the coin reflects the German national colors. The numbers 1 and 0 signify both a possible game score and the ten hosting cities of the European Championship.
