Description

Afghanistan is renowned for its diverse wildlife, with many of its larger mammals listed as globally threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Notable among these are the snow leopard, Marco Polo sheep, Siberian musk deer, markhor, urial, and Asiatic black bear. Other significant species include the ibex, gray wolf, brown bear, striped hyenas, and various birds of prey. Marco Polo sheep and ibex are primarily poached for food, while wolves, snow leopards, and bears are often killed to prevent damage.

Obverse

Depicts the coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, the country name in English above, the denomination below.

The emblem of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (1980-1987) features a rising sun positioned over a mihrab. It incorporates communist symbols such as the star, wheel, and Karl Marx's book 'Das Kapital'. Surrounding the emblem, a wreath of ears of grain is intertwined with the national flag, symbolizing unity and prosperity.

A leopard was recorded by a camera-trap in Bamyan Province in 2011. The long-lasting conflict in the country badly affected both predator and prey species, so that the national population is considered to be small and severely threatened. Between 2004 and 2007, a total of 85 leopard skins were seen being offered in markets of Kabul. Contemporary records do not exist for any of the smaller cat species known to have been present in the country, all of which were threatened already in the 1970s by indiscriminate hunting, prey depletion and habitat destruction.
