Description

The Magyar Nemzeti Bank issued commemorative coins titled "The sky-high tree" for the 15th Kecskemét Animation Film Festival. This coin was the first in a seven-piece series aimed at showcasing the values and visual world of Hungarian folk tales. The issuance marked the 50th anniversary of the Kecskemét Cartoon Studio, creators of the Hungarian Folktales cartoon series.

The production of the Hungarian Folktales cartoon series began in 1977, which, with a total of 100 episodes and 12.5 hours of material, introduces the viewer to the world of folktales so authentically that on October 15, 2020, the series was recognized as part of Hungary's cultural heritage for its unique depiction of the nation's spirit and values.

Obverse

Depicts a fairy-tale hero turned prince, formerly a shepherd boy, riding on a magical horse, depicted in half figure, with a towering tree in the background. To the right of the depiction of the towering tree, in two lines of handwritten letters, reads "To the sky" and "reaching tree". Along the left edge, at the bottom, the engraver's privy privy mark is placed.

In a faraway kingdom, a towering tree appeared in the king's garden one day, and a whirlwind suddenly snatched away the princess, brought her to a dragon's castle. The king offered half his kingdom to anyone who could rescue her, but many failed in their attempts. Eventually, a humble shepherd boy named Jánoska cleverly climbed the tree and journeyed to the dragon's castle. Despite the dragon's threats and evilness, Jánoska bravely confronted him and freed the princess. They escaped on a magical iron horse, pursued by the dragon. With the help of the magical horse's advice, Jánoska defeated the dragon and saved the princess. They returned home triumphantly, and Jánoska was hailed as a hero, eventually marrying the princess and inheriting half the kingdom.
