Description

The Magyar Nemzeti Bank issued a commemorative coin named "Király kis Miklós" ("King Little Miklós") on the birthday of Elek Benedek, coinciding with the Day of Hungarian Folktales. This coin is the second in a seven-part series designed to showcase the values and visual world of Hungarian folk tales.

The coin series celebrates the Hungarian folk tales cartoon series, produced by Pannónia Filmstúdió in 1977, which features 100 episodes. This series has been recognized for its authentic depiction of Hungarian folk tales, capturing the nation's soul and character. In 2020, it was included in the Collection of Hungarian Folktales for its unique visual, musical, and narrative qualities. The commemorative coin aims to honor and perpetuate these cultural traditions.

Obverse

Depicts a fairy tale prince, with a three-headed, fire-breathing dragon at the top. On the right side, below the dragon depiction, in two lines of handwritten text, are the inscriptions "King" and "little Miklós." At the bottom right edge is the engraver's privy mark.

The story: Once upon a time, a king had three daughters. One day, an evil black cloud, which was actually a dragon, appeared over the kingdom and demanded the daughters in exchange for the sun, moon, and stars. The king refused, and the dragon took the celestial bodies, plunging the kingdom into darkness. Little King Miklós offered to retrieve them in exchange for half the kingdom and the youngest daughter’s hand in marriage.

Miklós found and fought the dragon and his brothers, defeating them and reclaiming the stars, moon, and sun. However, on his way back, a wizard tricked him and stole the celestial bodies. Miklós encountered two extraordinary men on his journey back to the kingdom. After helping them solve some troubles, they joined forces to reclaim the celestial bodies from the wizard. Miklós restored light to the kingdom, married the youngest daughter, and was given half the kingdom. They lived happily ever after.
