Description

Lawrence College Ghora Gali, established in 1860 for the orphans of British soldiers, is located in Murree Tehsil, Punjab, Pakistan. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1950 meters (6395 feet) above sea level in the foothills of the Himalayas and Pir Panjal, the college spans 150 acres (61 ha). It is just 4 km from Murree and 57 km from Rawalpindi/Islamabad. Named after Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence, who was born in 1806 in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Bengal Artillery of the East India Company, Lawrence College is a part of the Lawrence Schools of South Asia. The original asylum building, constructed in 1859 and completed by 1860, initially served as a hostel for both boys and girls. Due to inadequate accommodation, a new hostel for girls, now known as Prep School, was built in 1867 and became operational in 1868. In 1869, a committee recommended avoiding the construction of new buildings due to financial constraints, but Lord Napier's visit in 1873 led to the suggestion of erecting a new building to improve accommodation, reflecting the satisfactory condition of the asylum at the time.
