Description

The Constitution of Pakistan, also known as the 1973 Constitution, serves as the paramount law governing Pakistan. This foundational document shapes Pakistan's legal framework, political culture, and governmental system. It delineates the state's structure, guarantees fundamental rights, establishes laws and regulations, and outlines the framework and functions of institutions including the armed forces. Drafted under the leadership of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto with input from opposition parties, it received unanimous approval from the 5th Parliament on 10 April and was ratified on 14 August 1973.

The Constitution's initial chapters define the roles, responsibilities, and separate powers of the three branches of government: a bicameral legislature, an executive branch led by the Prime Minister as chief executive, and a federal judiciary headed by the Supreme Court. It designates the President of Pakistan as a ceremonial Head of State, symbolizing national unity. The first six articles establish Pakistan as a federal parliamentary republic with Islam as the state religion. Additionally, the Constitution incorporates provisions ensuring the legal system aligns with Islamic principles derived from the Quran and Sunnah.

The Emblem of Pakistan, adopted in 1954, symbolizes the country's ideological foundation, economic basis, cultural heritage, and guiding principles. It consists of a crescent and star crest above a shield, surrounded by a wreath, with a scroll below. The green color and crest are traditional Islamic symbols. The shield is quartered to depict cotton, wheat, tea, and jute, signifying Pakistan's major crops at independence and its agricultural foundation. The floral wreath features Jasminum officinale, the national flower, reflecting traditional Mughal art and Pakistan's cultural heritage. The scroll bears the national motto in Urdu, "Īmān, Ittiḥād, Naẓm" (ایمان، اتحاد، نظم), translating to "Faith, Unity, Discipline," which serve as Pakistan's guiding principles. Designed by Maraj Muhammad, a student of the National College of Arts, this emblem encapsulates the essence of Pakistan's identity and aspirations.
