In 2002, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation launched an annual program to commemorate historical towns on bi-metallic 10 Ruble coins. Each coin features an image of the town and its coat of arms on one side, with the standard Russian 10 Ruble obverse on the other. Unlike many coin programs worldwide, there is no fixed number of coins released each year in this series.
Toropets is a town and the administrative center of Toropetsky District in Tver Oblast, Russia, situated at the confluence of the Toropa River and Lake Solomennoye. Its population was 13,015 according to the 2010 Russian census.
First mentioned in 1074, Toropets was initially under the control of the Princes of Smolensk. By 1167, it had its own princes and later became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the mid-14th century. Following the Battle of Vedrosha in 1503, Ivan III gained control of Toropets. Throughout its history, the town was part of various states, including the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, before becoming part of the Russian Federation. Significant changes occurred during the administrative reforms by Peter the Great in 1708, and it was transferred among various governorates, finally becoming part of Tver Oblast in 1990. The town was occupied by the Wehrmacht during WWII but was retaken in 1942. Toropets currently serves as the administrative center of Toropetsky District and holds urban settlement status within the district.
