Description

To celebrate the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the Austria Mint embarked on an undersea adventure showcasing the fascinating and colorful underwater world. With a mintage of 65,000, the series featured 12 innovative 3 euro colored coins, four of which were issued each year over three years. These coins not only captivated with their design but also featured special lighting effects.

The sea creatures depicted on the coins, despite seeming improbable and magical, truly existed. Many lived in the deep seas' perpetual darkness, where sunlight never reached, yet they possessed extraordinary luminous qualities—flashing, sparkling, glowing, and changing color as needed.

Similarly, the coins themselves glowed under ultraviolet light, sparking excitement and scientific curiosity. A dedicated ultraviolet torch allowed collectors to experience the enchanting creatures of Luminous Marine Life in their full, radiant glory.

Obverse

Depicts all 12 of the magical sea creatures in the Luminous Marine Life series in silhouette. Air bubbles up between them and a tail fin disappears beneath the waves to the right. Surrounded by the country name and the denomination.

Reverse

Depicts a wide band reminiscent of an old-fashioned porthole, that frames an aquatic scene and features an Antarctic krill in the center. As on all the coins in the series, a shell and a starfish can be seen to the left and below. When the coin is illuminated with ultraviolet light, the doctorfish begins to glow green and slightly bluish.

Despite its small size, the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) plays a massive role in the planet’s ecosystem and is featured in the Luminous Marine Life coin series. Growing up to 6 centimeters in length and weighing just 2 grams, this tiny crustacean is a cornerstone of the Antarctic food web. It supports a myriad of marine animals, including whales, fish, seals, penguins, and seabirds. By feeding on diatoms and other plant plankton, krill transfer the primary production energy from phytoplankton to higher trophic levels, forming dense swarms that can reach densities of 10,000–30,000 individuals per cubic meter. Their well-being directly influences the health of other species in their ecosystem.

Antarctic krill are notable for their bioluminescence, emitting light through specialized organs in their bodies, which function similarly to a torch with a concave reflector and lens. This bioluminescence, along with their ability to thrive on microalgae found on the underside of drift ice in the spring, underlines their adaptability and ecological importance. As one of the most abundant animal species on Earth, with a biomass estimated at approximately 500 million metric tons, Antarctic krill are vital to the Southern Ocean's health and stability.
