It is known for its striking ability to use bioluminescence, thanks to a symbiotic relationship with the bacterium Vibrio fischeri. The bacteria reside in a specialized light organ in the squid's body, enabling it to produce light that helps camouflage it against moonlight and starlight on the ocean floor, a phenomenon known as counter-illumination.

Measuring only about 3 cm (1.2 inches) long, the Hawaiian bobtail squid is an important model organism in scientific research, particularly in the study of symbiosis and microbial interactions.
