The osprey (Pandion haliaetus), also known as the sea hawk or fish hawk, is a large, diurnal bird of prey with a global range, found on all continents except Antarctica. This raptor, measuring over 60 cm (24 in) in length and spanning 180 cm (71 in) across its wings, is known for its fish-based diet and its ability to thrive in diverse habitats near bodies of water. It is the sole species in the genus Pandion and family Pandionidae. First described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, the osprey has four recognized subspecies, with minor variations across different regions. Though typically migratory, some subspecies, like the Australasian osprey, are non-migratory. The osprey's name has roots in Latin and Greek, with "Pandion" referring to a mythical Greek king and "haliaetus" meaning "sea eagle." Fossils suggest the family Pandionidae dates back millions of years, with ancient remains found in locations like Egypt and Germany.
