The Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara was a wedding present in 1947 from her grandmother, Queen Mary, who received it as a gift from the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland in 1893 on the occasion of her marriage to the Duke of York, later George V. Made by E. Wolfe & Co., it was purchased from Garrard & Co. by a committee organised by Lady Eve Greville. In 1914, Mary adapted the tiara to take 13 diamonds in place of the large oriental pearls surmounting the tiara. At first, Elizabeth wore the tiara without its base and pearls but the base was reattached in 1969. The Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara is one of Elizabeth's most recognisable pieces of jewellery due to its widespread use on British banknotes and coinage.

An element from Flying Scotsman accompanied by the blue-green 2012 London Olympic logo and a quotation from William Shakespeare’s Richard III, "True hope is swift". The quotation represents the speed of Flying Scotsman as well as being a sentiment with which all Olympians could associate.

Industrialisation first started in Britain and it has since re-shaped the world. Steam power was hugely important to this and so the Flying Scotsman has been taken as a symbol of Britain's industrial heritage.

Flying Scotsman is one of the most famous locomotives in the world. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster works in 1923, this iconic locomotive holds a host of records, including being the first locomotive to complete a non-stop London to Edinburgh run. Flying Scotsman locomotive 4472 was the first steam engine to achieve a fully authenticated speed of 100mph. In 1989 a tour of Australia resulted in two new world records – the longest non-stop run by a steam engine (422 miles), and the first locomotive to circumnavigate the globe when travelling back to the UK via Cape Horn.

The London 2012 Summer Olympics logo is four abstract shapes placed in a quadrant formation spelling out "2012". The word "London" is written in the shape representing the "2", while the Olympic rings are placed in the shape representing the "0".
