The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a bird of prey native to North America, commonly found near large bodies of water. It primarily feeds on fish, snatching them from the water with its powerful talons. Known for its striking white head and tail contrasting with a dark brown body, the bald eagle is not actually bald; the name refers to an older term for "white-headed." Females are about 25% larger than males. Once endangered, the species has made a significant recovery in the U.S. and was removed from the endangered species list in 2007. It remains a symbol of the United States.
