The harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) is one of the largest and most powerful birds of prey, native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. It is known for its massive size, with females weighing up to 9 kg (20 lbs) and males being smaller. Its distinct appearance includes slate-black feathers, a grey head crowned with a double crest, and striking black and white coloration. The harpy eagle is a top predator, hunting mainly in the canopy layer for mammals like monkeys and sloths. Habitat destruction, particularly deforestation, has greatly reduced its range, making it nearly extinct in Central America.
