The horned owl, commonly referred to as the great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), is a large and powerful bird of prey found throughout the Americas. Known for its prominent ear tufts or "horns," it has striking yellow eyes and a mottled brown and gray plumage that provides excellent camouflage in forests and open habitats. This nocturnal hunter preys on a wide variety of animals, including small mammals, birds, and reptiles, making it a versatile and formidable predator. Adaptable to various environments, from woodlands to deserts, the great horned owl is also known for its eerie hooting call and its fierce territorial behavior, often driving off larger raptors to protect its domain.
